My initial reaction to a photo of Charles Bukowski was to recoil. His ruddy gruffness reminding me of dirty old drunk men. I could smell him from the photo.
But his words wooed me.
His woundedness and callousness are an endearing combination.
He didn't try to sell himself as anything but what he was.
His insights are brutally honest and surprisingly beautiful coming from a dirty old man.
